This theatre, with its monumental architecture of Italian Renaissance style and French Neonclassical ornamentation, was opened on 25th May, 1908 with the opera “Aida” by Verdi.
It was closed for three years due to restauration and opened its doors again on 24th May, 2010 since it was the Bicentenary Celebration of the May Revolution.
It is considered as one of the most famous theatres in the world, with an impressive programme that includes opera and ballet performances. It is usually compared with the Scala in Milan and the Opera in Paris with an exceptional acoustics and a seating capacity of 3.000 people.
